Radiators Not Heating Up? Common Causes and Safe Checks
Work through these simple checks to understand what is wrong with your radiators before calling out a heating engineer.
If your radiators are not heating up properly, it can be worrying, especially in cold weather. The good news is that many problems can be narrowed down with a few simple, safe checks that do not involve taking your boiler apart.
Safety first before you start checking
Before touching anything, make sure your heating is on and the system has been running for at least 15 to 20 minutes. This makes it easier to judge which radiators are working and which are not.
If you ever smell gas, suspect a carbon monoxide issue, or feel unwell when the heating is on, turn everything off, leave the property immediately and follow Gas Safe guidance. Do not try to investigate further yourself.
Never remove your boiler casing or attempt to access parts that require tools. Anything inside the boiler should only be handled by a Gas Safe registered engineer.
Step one: notice the main symptom
Start by looking at what is happening across all your radiators. This will point you towards the most likely type of fault.
All radiators cold – likely a boiler, control, or pressure issue
Some radiators cold – often a valve, balancing, or local issue
Radiators warm but not hot – circulation, settings, or mild blockage
Radiator cold at bottom or top – usually air or sludge
Once you know which matches your situation, move to the relevant section below and follow the checks in order.
All radiators cold
If every radiator is cold, the problem is usually central rather than with individual radiators.
Check your programmer and room thermostat
Make sure the heating is actually scheduled to be on. Check the programmer or heating controls are not set to “off” or “hot water only”.
Then check the room thermostat. Turn it up a few degrees above the current room temperature. You should hear a click or see an indicator that the heating is calling for heat.
Check the boiler display and pressure
Look at your boiler display for error codes or flashing lights. Make a note of anything shown, as this will help an engineer later.
Then check the pressure gauge on your boiler or nearby pipework. Most systems should sit in the green zone when cold, often around 1 to 1.5 bar. If it is below the green area, that can stop the system from working. If the boiler is showing an error, keeps locking out, or the pressure will not stay in the green zone, it is time to call an engineer.
Some radiators cold while others are hot
When some radiators work and others stay cold, the problem is usually with valves or how the system is balanced.
Check thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs)
On the colder radiators, look at the TRVs – the numbered heads on one side. Make sure they are turned up and not set to frost or the lowest setting.
If they are set correctly but the radiator stays cold, the valve pin may be stuck shut. You can safely try removing the plastic head (it usually unscrews by hand) to expose a small metal pin. If you gently press it down and it springs back up easily, it is likely fine. If it will not move or feels stuck, an engineer should free or replace it.
Check lockshield valves and balancing
The valve on the other side of the radiator is the lockshield, often with a plastic cap. These control how much water flows through each radiator and are normally set during system balancing.
If one radiator is cold and its lockshield is almost closed, very slight opening with a small turn can help. However, changing lockshields everywhere can upset the balance and make other rooms colder. If several radiators are affected, it is better to have an engineer rebalance the system properly.
Radiators warm but not hot enough
If radiators heat up a bit but never feel properly hot, your system might be struggling with circulation or set too low.
Check boiler and room settings
First, check the boiler’s central heating temperature setting. On many boilers, this can be adjusted up or down independently from hot water. If it is set very low, your radiators will only ever feel lukewarm.
Also check that any eco or low-temperature modes are not set too aggressively in cold weather. While running cooler can be efficient, the house still needs to reach a comfortable temperature.
Signs of pump or zone valve issues
If settings look sensible but the whole system is weak, the circulation pump or zone valves might not be working properly. You may hear unusual noises, or radiators furthest from the boiler might be the coolest.
Pumps and motorised valves are not DIY jobs. If you suspect a circulation problem, keep notes on which radiators are affected and how quickly they heat, then book an engineer appointment.
Radiator hot at top but cold at bottom
A radiator that is hot at the top and cold or cool at the bottom usually points to sludge or debris sitting in the lower part of the radiator.
Over time, corrosion and dirt can build up, restricting the flow of water and reducing efficiency. You might also notice discoloured water when bleeding, or kettling and gurgling noises from the system.
This kind of problem often needs a professional powerflush or targeted clean of the affected radiators. An engineer can advise whether the whole system needs flushing or if a local clean is enough.
Radiator cold at top but warm at bottom
If the bottom of the radiator is warm but the top stays cold, there is usually air trapped in the radiator.
Bleeding a radiator safely
Bleeding is one of the few tasks many homeowners can safely do themselves. Turn the heating off and let the system cool for at least 20 to 30 minutes.
Use a radiator key on the bleed valve at the top corner of the radiator. Turn it slowly anti-clockwise until you hear air hiss out, then close it again as soon as water starts to appear. Have a cloth ready to catch any drips. Afterwards, check your boiler pressure is still in the green zone, as bleeding can lower it slightly.

You can use this basic flow to work out what to do next:
If all radiators are cold, then check controls, thermostat, boiler display, and pressure first.
If only some radiators are cold, then focus on TRVs and lockshields on those specific radiators.
If radiators are all lukewarm, then review boiler temperature settings and consider potential pump or zone valve issues.
If a radiator is cold at the top, then try bleeding it once the system is cool.
If a radiator is cold at the bottom, then consider sludge and speak to an engineer about cleaning or powerflushing.
When to call an engineer and what to tell them
If you have checked the obvious settings, bled radiators where appropriate, and your heating is still not working correctly, it is time to call a professional. Ongoing faults can increase your bills and put extra strain on the boiler.

Make a note of your boiler make and model, any error codes on the display, the current pressure reading and whether it is in the green zone, and a list of which radiators are affected and how (all cold, some cold, top or bottom cold).
