When your boiler suddenly stops and a fault code pops up on the screen, it can be worrying. The good news is that code is your boiler’s way of protecting itself and guiding you to the next safe step rather than leaving you guessing.
What a boiler fault code actually means
Modern boilers constantly monitor for problems. If something looks unsafe or outside normal limits, the boiler will shut itself down and show an error or fault code. This is known as a safety lockout and is designed to prevent damage or danger.

Careful use of the reset button
Most boilers have a reset button or control. It is normally safe to reset the boiler once after you have checked the basics. Follow the instructions in the manual, as some require the button to be held for a few seconds.

Condensate pipe and visible leaks
On condensing boilers, the white plastic condensate pipe carries away acidic water from the boiler. Ignition and flame related codes
These codes usually indicate the boiler tried to light the burner but could not detect a stable flame. Common causes include gas supply issues, a faulty ignition electrode, or problems with the flame sensor or burner.
You might notice the boiler trying to start several times, clicking noises, or short bursts of flame that then cut out. Anything involving gas combustion must be handled by a Gas Safe engineer.
Low pressure and water circulation
