How to Balance Radiators for Even Heat (DIY Checks)
Simple, safe DIY checks to help your radiators heat rooms more evenly before you call out a heating engineer.
If some rooms in your home are toasty while others stay stubbornly chilly, your radiators may need balancing. With a methodical approach you can often improve things yourself and make your heating feel more even and comfortable.
What balancing radiators actually means
Balancing is the process of adjusting how much hot water flows through each radiator so they all heat up at a similar rate. It is about fine-tuning, not turning rooms on and off.
Without balancing, radiators close to the boiler often get most of the hot water, leaving those further away cooler. You might notice upstairs roasting while the hallway or lounge never quite warms up.
Balancing uses the lockshield valves on your radiators, not the usual room temperature controls, to share the heat more fairly around the system.
How balancing differs from bleeding and powerflushing
It helps to be clear about the different heating jobs, as they solve different problems.
Bleeding radiators removes trapped air that makes the top of a radiator cold and can cause gurgling sounds.
Balancing radiators adjusts water flow so all radiators warm up together and rooms heat more evenly.
Powerflushing is a professional clean of the pipework and radiators to remove sludge and rust that restrict water flow.
If your radiators are hot at the top but some rooms are still much colder than others, balancing is usually the next thing to try after bleeding.
Know your radiator valves: TRV vs lockshield
On most modern radiators you will see two valves, one on each side. It is important not to confuse them.
The TRV (thermostatic radiator valve) usually has numbers or a temperature scale on it. This controls how warm the room gets by shutting off flow when the room reaches its set temperature.
The lockshield valve is typically plain, sometimes with a small plastic cap. This is the one used for balancing. It is often partly closed already and may need a small spanner or lockshield key to turn.
For balancing, you leave TRVs fully open while you make small adjustments to the lockshields.
Step-by-step method to balance your radiators
1. Prepare the system safely
Start with the heating off and the system cool so you can handle valves safely. Make sure you know which boiler controls switch the heating on and off.
Check that all radiators are bled first and that the boiler pressure (on a combi or system boiler) is within the normal range, usually around 1 to 1.5 bar when cold.
2. Fully open all radiator valves
Turn every TRV in the house fully open, usually to the highest number. On radiators without TRVs, open the manual valve fully by turning it anticlockwise.
Gently open each lockshield fully as well, counting how many turns it takes from fully closed to fully open. Write this down for each radiator so you can always return to the starting point.
3. Turn the heating on and let it stabilise
Set the room thermostat high enough that the heating will stay on. Leave the system running for at least 20 to 30 minutes so water temperatures have time to settle.
Your aim is to see which radiators heat fastest and which lag behind. Radiators closest to the boiler and pump usually get hot first.
4. Check temperatures: thermometer or by feel
The most accurate approach is to use clip-on pipe thermometers on the flow and return pipes of each radiator. Ideal balancing often targets roughly a 12 to 20 degree difference between flow and return.
If you do not have thermometers, you can still get useful results by feel. Carefully touch the inlet and outlet pipes, as well as the radiator surface, to judge how quickly and evenly each one heats.
Identify radiators that are very quick to heat and those that stay noticeably cooler. Quick radiators will usually need their lockshields slightly closing, while slow ones may need a little more flow.
5. Adjust lockshield valves in small increments
Start with the radiator closest to the boiler that heats up fastest. Using a lockshield key or small adjustable spanner, turn the lockshield valve very slightly clockwise to restrict flow.
Work in quarter turns at most, then leave the system to run for another 10 to 15 minutes before judging the effect. Patience is important here.
For radiators that stay cooler, you can open the lockshield slightly (anticlockwise) to allow more hot water through. Again, use small movements and recheck gradually.
6. Re-check room by room
Walk through the house and compare how evenly the radiators are heating. Ideally, they should all reach a comfortable temperature without huge differences between rooms.
It can take a couple of rounds of small adjustments to get things feeling balanced. Once you are happy, reset your TRVs to your usual room settings.
Common balancing mistakes to avoid
The valves on older systems can be delicate, so take your time and never force anything. If a valve feels stuck, stop immediately.
Do not overtighten lockshields. Turning too hard can snap older valves or cause leaks. You are aiming for small tweaks, not fully shutting radiators off.
Make sure you are working on the lockshield rather than the TRV. Accidentally adjusting the TRV during balancing will give confusing results and rooms may end up too hot or too cold.
Keep an eye on the boiler while you work. If it starts switching on and off very frequently, known as short cycling, it is time to stop and seek professional advice.
When to call a Gas Safe heating engineer instead
Balancing is a safe, low-risk job when valves are in reasonable condition, but there are clear points where it is best to bring in a professional.
Any valve is stuck, seized, or starts weeping water when you touch it.
You suspect heavy sludge, for example radiators are hot at the top but cold at the bottom across the board.
The boiler short-cycles or makes unusual noises when the heating is on.
You notice drops in boiler pressure, leaks around radiators or pipework.
Gas appliances and sealed heating systems should only be worked on internally by a Gas Safe registered engineer. If in doubt, stop and get qualified help.
Quick troubleshooting FAQ
Radiator hot at top, cold at bottom
This usually suggests sludge rather than a balancing issue. The cooled, dirty water sits at the bottom and stops heat spreading properly. Bleeding and balancing alone will not fix this.

One radiator will not heat at all
Check the obvious first: that both valves are open and the TRV is not stuck in the closed position. Gently remove and refit the TRV head if it seems jammed.
If the radiator remains stone cold while others work, the pipework or valve may be blocked, or there could be an airlock. This is a good point to stop DIY attempts and call an engineer.
Heating system takes ages to warm up
If all radiators warm very slowly, the issue may be with the boiler, pump, controls, or heavy sludge in the system rather than basic balancing. Check that your programmer and room thermostat are set correctly and that the boiler shows no fault codes.
