Boiler losing pressure: what it means and what to check

If your boiler keeps losing pressure it can be worrying, especially as it often happens just when you need heating or hot water most. The good news is that a lot of pressure issues are straightforward to understand, and there are a few safe checks you can do before calling out an engineer.

Normal boiler pressure explained

On most modern sealed system boilers, the pressure gauge should sit around 1 to 1.5 bar when the system is cold. This is usually marked in green on the dial, with red areas showing too low or too high.

When your heating comes on, the pressure will rise slightly as the water heats and expands. A rise of around 0.3 to 0.7 bar is common and usually nothing to worry about as long as the reading stays within the boiler’s safe range.

If the pressure drops below about 1 bar when cold, or your boiler shows a low-pressure fault, it typically means there is not enough water in the system, or there is a leak or component issue that needs attention.

Main reasons a boiler keeps losing pressure

Pressure loss is usually caused by water escaping, either from the system itself or via safety components that are doing their job. Some causes are minor, others need professional attention.

  • Small leaks at radiator valves, pipe joints or towel rails

  • Recent radiator bleeding letting air out and lowering system water level

  • Pressure relief valve (PRV) discharge if the system has been over-pressurised

  • Expansion vessel problems so pressure swings too high and then drops

  • Internal boiler leaks or hidden pipework leaks under floors or in walls

Even a very slow drip can cause the pressure to drop over days or weeks. If you find yourself topping up the system regularly, there is almost always a leak or a failing component behind it.

Safe step-by-step checks at home

Before you touch anything, always refer to your boiler manual for model-specific instructions, and never open the case of a gas appliance. The checks below are external and safe for most homeowners.

1. Read the pressure when the system is cold

Turn the heating off and let the boiler cool for at least an hour. Then check the pressure gauge on the front of the boiler or on nearby pipework.

Ideally it should be around 1 to 1.5 bar. If it is close to 0.5 bar or in the red low zone, the boiler may shut down to protect itself and will usually need topping up.

2. Inspect radiators, valves and visible pipework

Walk around your home and look carefully at each radiator valve and the surrounding floor or skirting boards. Check under towel rails, exposed pipes and joints you can easily see.

You are looking for damp patches, staining, green or white crusty marks on copper joints, or signs of rust. Even if the area is dry now, staining can show that water has been leaking intermittently.

3. Check the outside PRV discharge pipe

Your boiler will have a pressure relief valve connected to a small copper pipe that usually exits through an outside wall and points downwards. This allows water to escape if pressure gets too high.

Stand outside and look at the end of this pipe. If you see water dripping, staining on the wall, or limescale around the outlet, the PRV may be passing water and causing your pressure to drop.

4. Note what happens after a heating cycle

Top the system up if needed (more on that below), then run the heating and observe the pressure rise. Once the heating goes off and the system cools, check the gauge again.

If the pressure climbs very high when hot then drops right down again as it cools, it often points to an expansion vessel or PRV issue that needs an engineer’s attention.

5. Topping up pressure using a filling loop

Most sealed systems have a filling loop, often a small flexible braided hose or built-in taps under the boiler. This lets you add water from the mains to bring the pressure back up.

In simple terms, the process is:

  • Turn the boiler off and let it cool

  • Locate the filling loop and check the manual for the correct procedure

  • Open the valves gently until the gauge rises to around 1 to 1.5 bar

  • Close both valves firmly and switch the boiler back on

Never leave the filling loop open or exceed the recommended pressure. If you are unsure where the filling loop is, or feel at all uncomfortable, do not attempt this yourself.

Clear triggers to stop and call an engineer

There are certain situations where it is safer to stop troubleshooting and get professional help. Leaving a pressure problem can damage your boiler or property, so it is better to act early.

You should call a qualified engineer if:

• The pressure keeps dropping even after you have topped it up once or twice
• You can see any visible leaks from the boiler, radiators or pipes
• The boiler shows fault codes you do not understand
• You hear loud banging, knocking or whooshing noises
• You do not know where the filling loop is or how to use it safely

Internal boiler leaks, expansion vessel faults and PRV issues are not DIY jobs. They involve gas and safety-critical components and must be handled by a competent person.

Protecting your home while you wait for repair

If you suspect a significant leak, turn off the heating and keep an eye on the pressure gauge. If water is dripping from pipework, place a bowl or tray underneath and dry any wet surfaces.

For fast or worsening leaks, you may need to isolate the water supply using the stopcock to reduce damage. If water is near electrics, turn off the affected circuit at the consumer unit and avoid contact with the area.

Make a note of any fault codes, unusual sounds or smells to share with your engineer. This can speed up diagnosis and repair.

Common questions about boiler pressure

Is 0.5 bar too low?

In almost all modern sealed systems, 0.5 bar is too low. Many boilers will not operate safely at this level and will lock out until the pressure is increased.

You should normally top up to around 1 to 1.5 bar when the system is cold, following your manual. If it repeatedly falls back to 0.5 bar, there is a problem that needs professional investigation.

Why does the pressure rise when the heating is on?

As the water in your system heats up, it expands, so the pressure gauge will go up. A modest rise while the heating is running is completely normal.

An expansion vessel in or near the boiler is there to absorb this extra volume. If the pressure shoots up into the red when hot, the vessel may need attention and you should ask an engineer to check it.

Can a leak be under floors?

Yes, some of the most stubborn pressure loss issues come from leaks in pipework buried under floors or hidden in walls. These can be hard to spot because the water soaks into subfloors or ground.

Signs might include localised warm areas on the floor, musty smells, or pressure dropping with no visible damp anywhere. Specialist leak detection or system testing by an engineer is usually needed.
